Open source technologies are key to creating a shared space to foster mutual learning and exchange of tools and methodologies, and to work on sustainable solutions. Open source could also play an important role in developing alternatives to the current digital and social media monopolies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Around twenty specialists in investigative journalism, data analysis and connectivity participated in the workshop; there were presentations of five technologies and a space for discussion to learn more about the projects, debate about the challenges faced by these types of technologies and learn how to create connections between them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event began with a session on best practices, featuring Colmena as a collaborative ecosystem for community media; the Brazilian data and storytelling lab Data Labe<\/a>; the independent newsroom Correctiv<\/a>; the open source social enterprise Wakoma<\/a>; and the technology specialist organization Tactical Tech<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n

The presentation of these projects guided the afternoon exchange, in which they discussed how to achieve greater sustainability for innovations and how to have more openness for open source innovation in international cooperation and in the media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Themes of openness, collaboration and co-creation were the basis of this one-day workshop. DW Akademie, through the DWA Lab initiative, offers spaces for discussion and innovation in which emerging technologies and their impact on journalism, media and audiences are explored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
